In the 1960s, Beijing decided to build a number of sports venues, the Capital Stadium came into being. At that time, the Beijing Gymnasium was built in the southeast of Beijing City, and the workers Gymnasium was built in the eastern suburbs. In order to balance the layout of large stadiums in the city, the location of the Capital Stadium was determined in the western suburbs.
According to the original plan, there are two alternative locations for the Capital Stadium: one is the Xidan intersection, and the other is opposite the Cultural Palace of Nationalities. After the plan was reported, it was denied by the superior leadership. The reason is that these two places are concentrated, and the traffic tasks in Fuxingmen, Xidan and other places are heavy, and the construction cost is too large. In the end, Premier Zhou Enlai personally approved the address of the Capital Stadium at the northeast corner of the Baishi Bridge.
On June 1, 1966, the construction of the Capital Gymnasium began, and Beijing No. 3 Construction was responsible for the construction.
During its construction, the stadium was named the People's Stadium.
In October 1968, it was completed and officially renamed the Capital Gymnasium. [2]
In 2006, the first renovation was completed. After the transformation, the Capital Gymnasium will set up a press conference hall on the ground floor, a press workspace on the ground floor, a rest hall on the second floor, a balcony on the third floor, and the fourth and fifth floors are mainly used for command and monitoring communication system rooms and mobile rooms. In addition to some functional adjustments, part of the shear wall was added to transform the original frame structure into a frame-shear structure, which enhanced the seismic capability of the venue. After the renovation, the head body can meet the requirements of class 8 earthquake resistance, and extend the life of the venue for 30 years, saving the investment cost to the maximum. [3]
In 2007, it was renovated and expanded. [4]
On July 18, 2017, it opened to the general public for the first time. [11]
In 2018, the Capital Stadium, as the venue for the ice events of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, initially formed a renovation plan, which upholds the construction concept of "restoring the old as the old" and maintains the historical and artistic value of the Capital Stadium. To this end, the exterior stone of the capital Gymnasium is consistent with the original building structure and overall style in color and style. [1] [9]
On July 16, 2022, after a complete renovation, the Capital Stadium, as the venue for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, was officially opened to the public. [18]

Competition hall

The competition hall has a plane of 99 meters ×112.2 meters, a net height of 20.3 meters -- 20.8 meters, and the maximum size of the field is 40 meters ×88 meters, which can be used for ice hockey, large-scale gymnastics, basketball volleyball and table tennis competitions. EDITOR
The Capital Gymnasium is a reinforced concrete frame structure, and the roof is an overall flat-bed bidirectional space steel grid. The whole roof is composed of 544 small units on 64 column supports around the roof, which is the first use of this structure in China. [4]
The Capital Gymnasium uses the latest sound and light technology to create the "most beautiful ice". The Capital Gymnasium has installed the world's leading integrated video display system, through the use of aluminum alloy frame structure on the top of the venue, hanging 36 37 square meters of grid film, so as to form a 1332 square meter giant projection screen on the top of the venue, is the largest indoor video display system in China. At the same time, the four corners of the venue are arranged with laser projectors, which will project gorgeous lights and beautiful pictures to the screen at the top of the venue, and when the athletes enjoy dancing on the ice, it is as if they are in a dream. "The Most beautiful Ice" can not only create a fantastic competition experience in figure skating and short track speed skating in the Winter Olympics, but also provide an excellent sports atmosphere and audience visual guidance for attracting mass ice and snow sports experience after the games. 12 - [13]
The ice surface of the Capital Stadium also uses carbon dioxide ice making, which is the most advanced and environmentally friendly ice making technology in the world, with carbon emissions approaching zero and the temperature difference on the ice can be controlled within 0.5 degrees. This kind of refrigeration is 30% more efficient than the traditional way, and the refrigeration is very uniform, and there will be no different temperature in each part. The Capital Gymnasium recycles the waste heat generated during the refrigeration process, which can save more than 1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, greatly enhancing the green properties of the venue. [12]
Capital Gymnasium was built in 1968 and is one of the top ten historic buildings in Beijing. From "ping-pong diplomacy" to the hosting of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games volleyball competition, this "post-60" venue carries countless unforgettable historical memories of new China's sports. In order to maintain the original appearance of the venue to the greatest extent and maintain its historical and cultural value, the project renovation adheres to the priority of protection, and makes a detailed protection plan for finished products to ensure that all items with historical value are intact.
The stone steps in front of the Capital Stadium, each piece is a witness to major historical events. In the process of transformation, the echo relationship between the steps and the surrounding environment, landscape and architecture was fully considered. On the basis of retaining the original structure and materials, meticulous cleaning and repairing work were carried out to reproduce the memory of "old Beijing". The elegant beige wall is also the iconic style of the Capital Stadium. More than ten comparison tests were carried out during the renovation, and the closest imitation stone paint was used to re-spray the facade, perfectly presenting the solemn atmosphere of the Capital Stadium. The project team made full use of digital technology and other new means, used 3D scanning to restore the building model, carried out field measurement for many times, compared the massive data, and carried out hundreds of corrections and checks, so as to achieve the perfect fit between the model and the construction site, greatly improving the efficiency and quality of transformation and protection [16] .
