He has been committed to the research of environmental systems analysis for a long time, and is committed to applying the methods and tools of system analysis to environmental engineering, planning, management and policy research, especially how to solve the comprehensive assessment of complex environmental problems and their uncertainties. It has organized, undertaken and participated in a number of national research projects, major projects, basic research and international joint research projects.

He undertook a number of national major projects, "973" research and provincial and ministerial level and international cooperation projects, guided more than 20 doctoral and master's students, and published nearly 140 papers.

In 2001 and 2004, he chaired the National Environmental Protection Bureau's "Liaohe River Basin" and "National Non-point Source pollution Control Policy Framework and action Plan".
From 2000 to 2005, he presided over or participated in major research works such as "Research on non-point Source Pollution Control Technology in Dianchi Basin" and "Research on Wastewater reuse Technology, Policy and Planning" of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the State. He is a member of the International Expert Group for Predicting Environmental Change, a member of the International Water Protocol Committee, a member of the International Advisory Committee on Environmental Futures, a member of many international professional societies, and a member of many domestic societies such as the director of the Environmental Technology Branch of the Chinese Environmental Society, and a member of the editorial board of many domestic and foreign academic journals.
1999 Won the first Ministry of Education Outstanding young teachers teaching and research award program.
In 2001 and 2005, he won the "Mentor and Friend" award of Tsinghua University graduate students twice.
"Urban Sewage Recycling Research Demonstration Project" was rated as the top ten national construction scientific and technological achievements in 2003.
In 2004, he won the first prize of excellent teaching achievements of Tsinghua University.
First prize of Huaxia Construction Science and Technology Award of Ministry of Construction of the People's Republic of China in 2005.
