In 1935, Almaty International Airport was opened to traffic [2] ; In 1998, Almaty International Airport completed the reconstruction of the runway and was upgraded to Category II international airport. In 2004, Almaty International Airport opened a new terminal. On 8 May 2020, Almaty International Airport joined TAV Airport Holding Company of Turkey [2] .

In 1935, Almaty Airport International Airport was opened to service military aircraft and small civilian aircraft [2] .
On July 28, 1989, China Southern Airlines opened the first route between China and Central and West Asia: Urumqi - Almaty route [4] .
In 1990, Almaty International Airport was placed under the administration of the Civil Aviation Department of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In 1991, the reorganization of Almaty International Airport was completed.
In 1998, the runway of Almaty International Airport was rebuilt and the airport was upgraded to a Category 2 international airport.
In 2004, a new terminal was opened at Almaty International Airport.
In 2013, the reconstruction and expansion of the Almaty International Airport terminal began [5] .
On 26 December 2017, a Challenger 60 small charter flight at Almaty International Airport (on a route from Hannover to Hong Kong via Almaty) veered off the runway during takeoff, crashed through the airport wall into the surrounding fields and exploded, killing one passenger and injuring three crew members [6] .
On 27 December 2019, a Bek Air passenger plane carrying 100 people crashed near Almaty International Airport on takeoff, killing 14 people and injuring 35 others, including six children [7] .
On May 8, 2020, the operational manager of Almaty International Airport changed from Venus Airport Investment Company to TAV Airport Holding Company of Turkey [2] .

In May 2022, Kazakhstan media reported on the 18th local time that Kazakhstan Fly Arystan plans to open an international flight from Aktao City to Prague (the capital of the Czech Republic), the flight is scheduled to open from June 12, 2022, one flight a week (Sunday), from July 6, 2022 onwards. Almaty International Airport has only one terminal for comprehensive passenger service terminal, the building structure is designed to be 3 floors above ground. The main functions of each floor are:
Ground Floor: International Arrivals Hall, small shops, ticket office, luggage storage, individual bank branches, toilet, cafe. There are airport dining and shopping areas for passengers. Arriving passengers of international flights go through customs, inspection and quarantine, border defense and security check procedures on this floor
Second floor: On the right, passengers for domestic flights go through the check-in security check on this floor. Passengers of international flights on the left go through customs, inspection and quarantine, border control and security check procedures on this floor. There is an international two-class lounge and an airport dining lounge.
Ground floor: Check-in, Customs, border control, SITA staff lounge and training center.
For international arrivals, please go to the first floor and the domestic arrivals exit is on the right. At the same time, the first floor is equipped with passenger changing rooms, cash machines, hotel/hotel consulting and other service facilities to provide passengers with more convenient and humanized ground services. The airport has an information desk staffed 24 hours a day on the first and second floors [1] .

Construction planning

The Almaty International Airport expansion and renovation project has started construction, and the construction of a new terminal with a total area of 55,000 square meters began on July 1, 2020, with a total investment of 150 million euros.
