Nihewan site group

Nihewan ruins The group is located in the east of Yangyuan County, Hebei Province, Sanggan The North Shore, Huaxiaoying Town Nihewan Within the village, located Sanggan upstream Yangyuan The basin. About 1.77 million years ago, ancient humans were active on this land and recorded the complete process of the change of the ancient lake in Nihewan for 2-3 million years. The stratum contains the remains of animal and plant fossils of ancient human activities in the ancient lake period, forming a "natural museum", which is a treasure site for the study of ancient humans, paleogeography, paleoclimate, paleontology and neotectonic kinematics in China, enjoying a high reputation in the international geological and archaeological circles, especially in the study of the origin of early human beings in the world. The systematic study of Nihewan has formed a unique cultural phenomenon - Nihewan culture. Since the 1970s, China's geological and archaeological workers have carried out large-scale excavation and research, and have found more than 80 sites of early cultural relics, of which 25 are more than 1 million years old, and 30 in the country. The early site area of Xiaochangliang 1.36 million years ago, the middle site area of Houjiayao about 100,000 years ago and the late site area of Hutou Liang about 10,000 years ago are collectively known as Nihewan Site Group, which is recognized as "the origin center of mankind and its culture in the world", and has a high status in the domestic and international. In the history of human origin in China, Nihewan is recorded as the origin of the Chinese nation. The starting grid of the bronze passage of the China Millennium Monument records: "From 1 to 3 million years ago, human beings have appeared in the land of China... Fossils and cultural remains of Homo erectus from this period have been found in Yunnan, Sichuan, Shaanxi and Hebei, and the northernmost site is Xiaochangliang in Yangyuan, Hebei." In October 2001, another important discovery was made at the Machuanggou site, where the remains of human eating were confirmed by relevant archeologists to date back to about 2 million years ago. The Mazhuanggou Site is the earliest human activity site with definite strata found in East Asia, including China. Nihewan, known as the "Oriental hometown of mankind", Nihewan Site Group was approved by The State Council as a national key cultural relic protection unit on June 25, 2001, was approved by The State Council as a national nature reserve on July 2, 2002, and was included in the national "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" major site protection project in October 2005. It ranks 36th among the 100 major site protection projects in the country. [27]
Nihewan ruins The group is not only the pride of the people of Hebei, but also a valuable and excellent cultural treasure of the world. Nihewan ruins According to geological time and archaeological identification, the group is divided into three periods: early, middle and late. The early Nihewan site group represented by Xiaochangliang site and Mazhuangou site (about 1.5-2 million years ago), the middle Nihewan site group represented by Houjiayao site (about 100,000-300,000 years ago), and the late Nihewan site group represented by Hutou Liang site (about 10,500 years ago). The main sites are:
1. Machanggou Site intro
Mazhuanggou site is located in the eastern part of Nihewan Basin, the northern edge of Datianwa platform on the south bank of Sanggan River, about 1000 meters away from Cenjiawan Village. This is a concentrated distribution area of early Paleolithic cultural sites. Cenjiawan village faces the Sanggan River in the north and the Northern Slope of the Datianyuan Platform in the south. Due to the action of water flow, several north-south giant gullies developed in Nihewan layer here, and the site of Majuanggou is one of them. In this area, there is a normal bedrock fault in the direction of NE-SW, and the site of Majuanggou is located on the upper wall of the fault, which is very close to the fault plane. The types of stone products found at Mazhuangou site include stone cores, stone flakes, stone hammers, scrapers, etc. Since 1993, a small area of excavation has been carried out in Mazhuangou, and since 2000, it has been excavated for five consecutive years. The species of animal bones found at Mazhuangou site include elephants, rhinoceroses, deer, horses, rodents, etc. The rare scene of human ancestors eating elephants has been found in the third culture layer, and eating large animals has become a human survival behavior, which is the only case in the paleolithic archaeological excavations in the world. The significance of the Machuanggou site not only pushes the age of the paleolithic site in the Nihewan Basin forward by hundreds of thousands of years to about 1.8-2 million years, becoming the earliest human activity site with exact strata found in East Asia so far, but more importantly, challenges the monism of human origin in Ethiopia, Africa.
The small long beam is a small earth beam located on the southern bank of the Sangan River. In 1978, scientists from the Institute of Paleontology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences discovered the small Changliang site. After several excavations, they found a large number of mammal fossils, which can be identified as mink, ancient Rhombodon, Chinese three-tailed horse, Sanmen horse, woolly rhinoceros, deer, antelope, cattle and so on. The three-toe horse is a mark animal of the Tertiary period, which can continue to the early Quaternary, in the Nihewan sites, only the small Changliang site found this ancient animal fossil. The stone tools unearthed in Xiaochangliang site are mainly small, with more than 1000 stone cores, stone pieces and stone tools, as well as percussion bone pieces. The site of Xiaochangliang was formed in the sedimentary layer of lakeside facies, and the relics were almost undisturbed and buried in situ. The discovery of the small Changliang site means that early humans lived in the small Changliang area. As the northernmost witness of human activity, it is engraved on the bronze passage of the China Millennium Monument in Beijing.
3. Houjia Kiln site intro
Houjiayao site is located in the northwest of Nihewan Basin. The site was discovered in 1974 by Jalampo and Veitch. The age of the site is 10.4-125,000 years ago. It is a typical representative of middle Paleolithic sites. Thousands of stone balls were unearthed as representative artifacts of the site. The discovery of human fossils is one of the important achievements of the excavation of the site, and 18 pieces of human fossil materials were found, including 2 occipital bones and 11 parietal bones. Some skull specimens show clear cut marks, which scholars speculate may be the result of cannibalism. One case of a 9.5 mm diameter hole in the back of the parietal bone of the skull had healed at the edge for at least two weeks, which may be the earliest surgical trephination ever discovered.
4. Hutou Liang Site intro
Hutou Liang site is located 25 kilometers east of Yangyuan County. First discovered in 1965 by scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. From 1972 to 1974, Gai Pei and Wei Qi of the Chinese Academy of Sciences carried out investigations and excavations in the Hutou Liang area. A large number of animal fossils were found together with cultural relics in the site, and the fossils that can be identified are: frog, ostrich, Vole, Mongolian yellow rat, Chinese Myospalax, mutant hamster, Wolf, wild horse, wild donkey, deer, cow, Przewalski antelope, goose-throated antelope, cornering antelope, wild boar. In addition, woolly rhinoceros and Nama elephant fossils were found near the site. A total of 7 stone hammers and anvils were unearthed at Hutou Liang Site, including 5 stone hammers and 2 stone anvils. 16 disk-shaped and tortoise-back stone cores were unearthed, 236 wedge-shaped stone cores were unearthed, 17 columnar stone cores were unearthed, 10 bipolar stone flakes were unearthed, 221 round-head scrapers were unearthed, and 13 flat bead ornaments were unearthed. The geological age of Hutou Liang site is the end of the late Pleistocene, and the cultural age is the late stage of the late Paleolithic Age. The absolute age should be around 10,000 years. In Hutou Liang Yujiagou site found sand-brown pottery and mammal fossils, for the study of Paleolithic to Neolithic transition, as well as the origin of agriculture, pottery origin and other important significance, filling a blank in the North China Paleolithic culture series, was named one of the top ten national archaeological discoveries in 1998. [28]
