Ask to see all his work. Yu Hua gave Zhang Yimou a clean copy of "To Live." After Zhang Yimou finished reading the novel, he was moved by the resilience and tenacious spirit of survival of the Chinese people written in the novel. After Zhang decided to make To Live, he spent nearly six months discussing the story, characters, structure and language with the cast and crew. Finally Zhang Yimou decided to tell the story of an ordinary family in the most ordinary way

protagonist
After the rough revision of the script of "To Live" was finalized, director Zhang Yimou and deputy director Wang Bin began to discuss the choice of leading and supporting actors, the first is the male lead, because Jiang Wen has his own affairs and can not be considered, Li Baotian's face is too vicissitudes of life, not suitable for playing the young Fugui, Zhang Yimou asked whether Ge You can be elected to this role, after discussion, Wang Bin and Zhang Yimou reached a consensus, Because the theme of the film is not too heavy, Ge You unique image, itself has a lot of humor color, will make the film a lot of color, so decided to choose Ge you as the male lead

Supporting role
Wang Bin and Shi Runjiu began to look for supporting characters before shooting. Shi Runjiu was well aware of the talent of the drama Academy and recommended Ni Dahong and Guo Tao, both of whom graduated from the school, to the crew of To Live. Wang Bin had gone to the drama Academy's small theater to watch an experimental drama called Sifan, in which the performance of Liu Tianchi, the lead actress, caught his attention. In particular, the pair of talking eyes are quite dramatic, which reminds her that Fengxia is a mute and needs to speak with her eyes, so she was chosen as the actor of big Fengxia. Subsequently, Wang Bin and Shi Runjiu went to the film academy actor database to choose their supporting roles, just happened to meet Jiang Wen's brother Jiang Wu came to find someone. Wang Bin and Jiang Wu had known each other before, and admired his performance in Han Gang's Ge Zi, so he chose him as a supporting role candidate, and all of these supporting roles were selected by Zhang Yimou to play major supporting roles in To Live.

"To Live" washes away Yu Hua's gory writing and leaves a calm presentation of the situation. "Alive" story telling and character performance, camera processing are very real, honest so that critics do not say head, but the situation and the state of people inside is very real, real tight. (
Hao Jianping, professor at Beijing Film Academy
)
[2]
The story of the film is very intimate, very real, as if it happened near the audience. A small person in the great changes of history in the ups and downs, completely unable to control their own fate, misfortune and frustrations always entwined him. However, he never gave up his belief in living, never complained about the world, and expressed infinite hope for life and the future. In addition, the soundtrack of the film is also very good, and in the empty space raised by the Erhu, all kinds of helpless lives are spilled out.

After filming was completed, To Live was blocked after being sent to the film bureau for review, which was not approved due to the political content of To Live's life theme.
