On July 1, 2017, Carrie Lam was sworn in as the fifth Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the first female chief executive since the return of Hong Kong.

On 3 July 2020, in accordance with Article 12 of the Law on Safeguarding National Security of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region established a Committee for Safeguarding National Security, with Lam Cheng Yuet-Ngor serving as the Chairperson of the Committee.
