"Changji" is a transpronunciation of "Yangji", originally in Turkic language, meaning "new". As early as in the "Turkic Dictionary" and "Yuan History, Geography, Northwest Appendix" are recorded in the "Yangji Bali" (meaning new city) the name. The name "Changji" is roughly evolved from the names of Zhangbao, Yangji Pali, Changdu Thorn or Changpali. "Yuewei Caotang Notes" or "West Region Waterway Records" says that Changji is a Dzunggar (Mongolian), is a transliteration of "Changpu", which was originally the name of a river.

Establishment evolution

In the Western Han Dynasty, the local area belonged to one of the 36 countries of the Western regions, and the rear area was divided into the front and the rear area. In the third year of the Western Han Dynasty (102 BC), when the Han set up "envoys" in the Western regions, the Han army ruled this area. In the fourth year of Yuankang (62 BC), Emperor Xuan of the Han Dynasty appointed Wuji lieutenant in Beiting (today's Jimsar County), and he was in administration for more than 400 years.
From the beginning of the 3rd century to the middle of the 6th century, the territory was successively the nomadic residence of Gaoche, Rouran, Turkic, Western Turkic Tiele and other tribes.

Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture is located at the northern foot of Tianshan Mountain and the southeastern edge of Junggar Basin. The terrain of Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture is high in the south and low in the north, sloping from southeast to northwest, with Tianshan Mountain in the south, vast alluvial plain in the middle, and vast desert basin in the north. This area is the north slope of Tianshan Mountain across the south, and is commonly called "North Slope of Tianshan Mountain". The Tianshan Mountain range in Xinjiang runs east-west through the central part of Xinjiang, which is divided into southern Xinjiang and Northern Xinjiang. It itself is composed of three mountain systems: South Tianshan Mountain, Middle Tianshan Mountain and North Tianshan Mountain. The central plain, commonly known as "oasis", is an area with flat terrain and superior soil and water conditions formed by surface runoff alluvial and diluvial between the southern Tianshan mountain and the northern desert basin. There are four major mineral deposits in the territory, namely, Tianshan Polymetallic deposit belt, Tianshan fore-mountain depression coal, building materials and placer gold deposit belt, petroleum and 硭硝 deposit belt in the southeast margin of Junggar Basin, and Beitashan copper and coal deposit belt. The Tianshan polymetallic deposit belt is located in the middle and low mountains of the Tianshan Mountains, with an east-west zonal distribution. Its ore-bearing strata are acidic and basic volcanic rocks of Devonian and Carboniferous system, with a thickness of more than 10,000 meters. Copper is the main mineral, followed by iron, chromium, lead, zinc, gold and other minerals.
