In 1966, Zhang Junzhao joined the army in Xinjiang. In 1974, after demobilization, he worked as a publicity officer at Unity Theater in Urumqi, Xinjiang. In 1978, Zhang Junzhao was admitted to the directing department of Beijing Film Academy
