"Turandot" is a grand debut in the historic and magnificent Taimiao of the Forbidden City in Beijing, China. This is a live recording of a star-studded audience. The opera is a collaboration between famous director Zhang Yimou and famous conductor Zubin Mehta Lien.
The three-act opera is based on the five-act allegorical play of the same name by the Italian playwright CarloGozzi (1720-1806), written by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni in 1921-1924, with only the first half of the third act completed before his death. The second half was continued by Afano. The story seems to be based on the Persian Fairy Chest, which was introduced to Europe in the late 17th century. The play premiered at La Scala on April 5, 1926, directed by Toscanini. On the opening night, in the third act, when Liu committed suicide, Toscanini put down his baton and said to the audience: "It was here that Puccini put down his pen." The play premiered the next day. The three acts of this opera are: The first act, in front of the Forbidden City in Beijing. Continuous andante, indicating Turandot's motive.
