Opera house

The Opera House is the grandest building in the National Center for the Performing Arts, and is dominated by gorgeous golden colors. It mainly staged opera, dance drama, ballet and large-scale artistic performances. The auditorium of the Opera House has a first floor of the pool and a third floor of the balcony, with a total of 2207 audience seats (including standing seats). The Opera House has an advanced stage with functions of pushing, pulling, lifting, descending and turning, a tilting ballet platform, and a lifting orchestra that can accommodate a three-pipe band [15] .
  • Wall facing
The Opera house installed a curved metal mesh on the wall, through which sound can pass, and the wall behind the metal mesh is polygon, thus forming a visual arc and a polygon of auditory space, achieving the combination of architectural acoustics and theater aesthetics, making the reverberation time reach 1.6 seconds [15] .
  • Orchestra pit
The orchestra pit of the Opera House covers an area of 120 square meters, which can accommodate a three-pipe band of 90 people, and can also be raised to the level of the auditorium to become an auditorium. In the orchestra pit, a special lifting platform is specially designed for the conductor, who can appear and end the curtain call in this special way [15] .
  • proscenium
The stage of the opera house adopts the form of "pin" stage, including the main stage, the left and right side stage and the rear stage. The stage has five functions of push, pull, rise, fall and turn, which can quickly change the scenery. The main stage has six lifting platforms, which can be lifted or lifted individually. There are six lateral moving platforms on the left and right sides, which can be exchanged with the main stage lifting platform to change the scene and participate in the performance [15] .
Under the rear stage, 15 meters from the ground, there is a ballet stage platform stored. After the main stage lifting platform is lowered, the ballet stage can be moved to the main stage platform for ballet performances. This seamless ballet table is also a tiltable ballet table, which can be tilted up to 5.7 degrees. The countertops are made of Oregon wood and have a three-tiered structure for added elasticity that maximizes the protection of the ballerina's toes [15] .
The height of the top of the grid above the stage is 32 meters, and the boom, light bridge and light bridge are suspended in the air through the wire rope. 61 electric boom, 78 rail single point crane, 24 free single point crane, respectively, used for hanging screens and scenes. The light bridge, the light bridge, the light hanger will be 1588 lamps used for performance dotted above the opera stage, and the light response is fast, you can change the shape in a few seconds [15] .

odeum

The style of the concert hall is fresh and elegant, suitable for large-scale symphony, folk music, and can hold a variety of concerts, with 1859 seats (including standing seats). The concert hall has the largest pipe organ in China, which can meet the needs of performances of different genres. In addition, the design of digital wall, abstract relief ceiling with modern beauty, GRC wall, turtle back sound reflection board can make the sound evenly and gently diffuse and reflect, so that the concert hall realizes the combination of architectural aesthetics and acoustic aesthetics [15] .
  • "Treasure of Town Hall" - organ
It's in the concert hall organ Elegant shape, full timbre, is China's largest volume, the largest number of plugs, the most pipes, the most rich timbre of one, with 94 stoppers, the number of sound pipes up to 6500. The organ is from a family of German organ makers, Johannes Kreis, and the famous German Cologne Cathedral The pipe organ comes from the same family and can meet the needs of different schools of works [15] .
  • ceiling
The ceiling of the concert hall is transformed into an abstract work of modern art, an irregularly shaped white floating statue of a rolling sand dune or a beach washed by waves. The seemingly messy grooves in the ceiling are actually acoustically designed so that sound can be diffused and reflected, more evenly and softly. The exquisite ceiling is actually a special acoustic diffusion decorative panel. The ceiling is made of fiber gypsum molding board with thick material, which can effectively prevent low-frequency absorption, enhance the low-frequency reverberation time in the hall, and make the bass effect (such as organ, bassoon, cello, etc.) more shocking and infectious. In order to achieve better sound effect, a centralized sound reflection board in the shape of a turtle is also hung under the ceiling, commonly known as "turtle back sound reflection board", its role is to scatter the sound in all directions [15] .
  • Bandstand and auditorium
According to the characteristics of the concert hall, the modified shoebox design is adopted, that is, the seats are surrounded by the stage, so that the stage is in the central area of the theater, so that the sound can be better spread and spread. The concert hall's bandstand is located on one side of the pool, and the bandstand is 24 meters wide and 15 meters deep, which can meet the performance of a four-pipe band of 120 people. The bandstand consists of a fixed table and three lifting platforms. By controlling the change of the height of the performance platform, a stepped playing table can be formed, and the performance of different instruments can be clearly displayed in front of the audience. The piano lifting platform in front of the bandstand can slowly lift the grand piano into the view of the audience. In order to meet the needs of large choral performances, the seats on the second floor of the auditorium behind the bandstand can be used by a chorus of 180 people [15] .
  • Wall facing
The wall around the stage of the concert hall uses an acoustic diffusion wall similar to that of the theater. The wall is like a piano key standing up, with ups and downs and irregular arrangement. The size and shape of the concave and convex are accurately calculated by number theory, which can diffuse and reflect the sound from the bandstand, ensure the performers' good self-hearing and mutual hearing, and help the band to better play the performance level. The side walls of the concert hall are decorated with sound diffusion panels similar to the ceiling, and the effect of slight bumps on the surface of the walls is also specially designed. Through these uneven textures, the sound can be evenly diffused and reflected to every corner of the concert hall space. With the combined effect of these tailored designs, the reverberation time of the concert hall can reach 2.2 seconds of high-quality sound [15] .

Its unique protruding lip design is very consistent with the characteristics of traditional Chinese drama performance [15] .
  • proscenium
The theater stage has two styles of "protruding" and "frame", which can be selected and used in accordance with the needs of the play. In the "extended" stage style, the platform at the front of the auditorium rises to become part of the stage, forming an extended lip, and the audience can watch the performance on the stage more closely. When the stage is not raised, this part of the area can be used as a orchestra pit, then the stage looks like a frame, so it is called the "frame" stage style. Theater stage area is divided into main stage and left and right auxiliary stage. The "drum type" turntable installed on the main stage is composed of 13 lifting blocks and 2 lifting platforms, which can be lifted as a whole or lifted separately, and can also create a stage effect of rotating while lifting [15] .
  • Wall facing
The wall of the auditorium of the theater uses a sound diffusion wall similar to that of the stage wall of the concert hall, which looks like a convex and concave undulation and irregular arrangement of vertical bars. A large number of irregularly arranged concave and convex grooves form sound diffusion and reflection as a whole, which can ensure the uniformity of indoor sound field. The wall is wrapped with special silk cloth, forming a wall pattern mainly in red, alternating with yellow and purple. The light shines on the wall, creating a theater atmosphere with Chinese characteristics at the same time, it can also play a good sound absorption effect [15] .

Scheme collection

Principal designer of the National Theatre: Paul Andreu
The architectural design of China National Center for the Performing Arts has been revised three times in two rounds of competition, which lasted 1 year and 3 months. 36 design units from 10 countries participated in the competition, and 69 schemes have participated in the selection. After repeated screening, demonstration, and soliciting the opinions of NPC deputies and CPPCC members, the design scheme designed by Paris Airport Company of France and cooperated with Tsinghua University was finally selected. The host designer is a famous French architect Paul Andrew .
Paul Andrew was born in 1938 Ecole de architecture de France And fellow of the French Academy of Architectural Sciences. Andrew designed it Soekarno-hatta International Airport , Cairo International Airport And Chinese Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Guangzhou New Stadium [23] .

Venue structure

The exterior of the China National Center for the Arts is a steel structure shell, in the shape of a semi-ellipsoid, the length of the east-west long axis of the plane projection is 212.20 meters, the length of the north-south short axis is 143.64 meters, the height of the building is 46.285 meters, slightly lower than the Great Hall of the People 3.32 meters, the deepest part of the foundation reaches -32.5 meters, as high as a 10-story building. The shell of the Grand Theater is made of more than 18,000 titanium metal plates, with an area of more than 30,000 square meters, and only 4 of the more than 18,000 titanium metal plates have the same shape. Titanium metal plate after special oxidation treatment, the surface of the metal luster is very textured, and the same color for 15 years. The central part is the gradual glass curtain wall, which is made of more than 1200 pieces of ultra-white glass. The ellipsoid shell surrounds the artificial lake, with a surface area of 35,500 square meters, and various channels and entrances are located under the water. Pedestrians enter the hall through an 80-meter-long underwater passageway [24] .

Design feature

  • Construction technique
National Grand Theatre
The Grand Theatre is located on the south side of Chang 'an Avenue, in the heart of Beijing. According to the requirements of the overall planning of Beijing, the height of the Grand Theater can not exceed the height of the Great Hall of the People, that is, 46 meters, but the functional requirements of the grand theater in the space of 46 meters is definitely not loaded, so it can only be developed underground. The underground depth of the Grand Theater is as high as a 10-story building, and 60% of the construction area is underground, which is the deepest underground project of public buildings in Beijing area, and the deepest place is -32.5 meters, which is directly below the stage of the Opera house. 17 meters below the ground floor of the Grand Theater is Beijing Yongding River palaeochannel [25] .
There are abundant underground groundwater, and the buoyancy generated by these groundwater can lift a giant aircraft carrier weighing 1 million tons, so huge buoyancy is enough to lift the entire National Grand Theater. The traditional solution is to pump groundwater continuously, but the result of this pumping of groundwater will be the formation of a 5km underground "groundwater funnel" around the Grand Theater, causing the surrounding foundation to settle and even the surface of the building may crack. In order to solve this problem, engineers and technicians have conducted precise research and poured an underground water barrier with concrete from the highest groundwater level to the clay layer 60 meters underground. This huge "bucket", formed by an underground concrete wall, encloses the foundation of the Grand Theatre. The pump is inside the bucket and pulls the water away, so that no matter how much water is pumped inside the foundation, the groundwater outside the bucket is not affected, so the surrounding buildings are safe [26] .
6,750 tons of steel beams to build the largest dome. The shell structure of the National Center for the Performing Arts consists of a curved steel beam, more than 18,000 titanium metal plates and more than 1,200 pieces of ultra-white transparent glass to form a huge sky of 36,000 square meters. The world's largest dome is not supported by a single pillar. The dome is coated with nanomaterials so that when rain falls on the glass surface, it doesn't leave a water stain. At the same time, nanotechnology also greatly reduces the adhesion of dust [27] .
In order to prevent the noise caused by raindrops falling on the dome, which is the size of ten football fields, Tsinghua University conducted repeated experiments. The experiment shows that if there is no effective anti-noise treatment, when the rain falls, the sound inside the dome will be like a thousand drums. The problem of anti-noise between the theater and the theater, between the theater and the outside, is also solved well by using a technology called "sound gate" [27] .
The artificial lake does not freeze in winter. The National Center for the Performing Arts is surrounded by an artificial lake. However, Beijing's winter temperature can sometimes drop below zero degrees Celsius, and how to keep the lake from freezing in winter has become a major problem. The survey found that at a depth of 80 meters, the underground water temperature remained at 13 degrees Celsius. Therefore, through a closed circulation system, the constant temperature of groundwater is injected into the lake, and the water temperature of the artificial lake can be controlled above zero in winter [27] .
In addition, in several years of construction, the National Grand Theater has also overcome a series of technical problems such as ultra-deep foundation construction and signal control inside the theater [27] .
  • Design concept
The Chinese National Center for the Performing Arts is innovative, avant-garde and unique in its design. It is a combination of tradition and modernity, romance and reality. The National Center for the Performing Arts of China is a great theater with a great orchestra, choir and production team. I believe the audience will finish watching the opera at the National Center for the Performing Arts. Aida After ", go to any theatre in the world to see Aida will be disappointed. conductor Zubin Mehta Review) [29]
In many historic theaters in Europe, they are often insensitive to the creative desires and demands of directors, and they say, "Oh, I see." And then nothing more. But in the National Center for the Performing Arts, the director's ideas will be spared no effort to cooperate, everyone will be excited about a good artistic idea, go all out, and the enthusiasm and humility of the staff here moved me. Design dispute

Paul Andrew's plan is a new, avant-garde building that will be like "a crystal drop of water" when completed, and he will push the Grand Theatre south to the east and west axis of the Great Hall of the People, moving the green space to the north. On Chang 'an Avenue, you have to pass the Great Hall of the People to see the National Center for the Performing Arts, which is a foil to Tiananmen and the Great Hall. This plan has been endorsed by many people inside and outside the industry. The leading group for the construction of the National Center for the Performing Arts decided to recommend this plan to the central government together with the other two advantageous plans. On July 22, 1999, the Politburo Standing Committee decided to adopt Andrew's plan.
However, the sudden addition of such a modern structure, seemingly from space, to the west side of the Great Hall of the People has caused great controversy. On June 10, 2000, 140 academicians and 114 architects signed a letter opposing the proposal. In order to be cautious, China's National Development and Reform Commission commissioned an international engineering consulting company to organize a demonstration meeting to conduct a feasibility study and demonstrate the preliminary design of the scheme. They invited more than 40 architects and technical experts to attend, and the debate was fierce. The architecture experts at the conference were evenly split between support and opposition to the proposal; Most technical experts support this solution; The experts at the Arts Council meeting all supported the proposal. China's National Development and Reform Commission once again reported the results of the international engineering consulting company's demonstration to the Party Central Committee, which was approved by the Political Bureau of the Central Committee [30] .

When it opened, the National Center for the Performing Arts set a goal of 800 performances a year. The Grand Theater adopts a three-dimensional ticket price system - according to the arrangement of the season project, 70% of the total ticket volume is for the people's ticket price, 10% is relatively expensive ticket price, which can not only meet the needs of different levels of appreciation, but also respect the law of the performing arts market, and maintain the stability of the domestic performance market order [32] .
In 2014, the Grand Theatre staged 910 performances, with a sales rate of 82.5%. Since the trial operation, the Grand theater has continued to pay attention to the problem of high ticket prices in the domestic performance market, from the initial purchase of programs, to the proportion of homemade programs has been rising, so as to effectively control costs, and the average ticket price has dropped from more than 400 yuan in the first year of opening to more than 200 yuan [33] .
