The easternmost end. The entire atoll is about 20 km long from north to south and 15 km wide from east to west. There is a lighthouse at the southern end of the island.
The island is disputed between Indonesia and Malaysia. Malaysia and Indonesia have been at loggerheads since 1969 over the sovereignty of the islands of Sipadan and Ligitan, which lie in waters off the border of the Malaysian state of Sabah and the Indonesian province of East Kalimantan. In May 1997, the two sides signed an agreement to refer the dispute over the islands to the International Court of Justice. The International Court of Justice began its public hearing of the territorial claim case on June 3.
