  • Construction background
In the 1960s, Sino-Soviet relations deteriorated due to Khrushchev's reforms. At the same time, as the Vietnam War intensified and the United States sent more troops to the Taiwan Strait, Sino-American relations were also increasingly tense; Influenced by the Soviet Union and the United States, India, Japan, South Korea and other countries are also hostile to China. At that time, China's military industry was evenly distributed in the eastern and coastal areas, and once the war position would be extremely unfavorable, so the "three-line construction" plan was put on the strategic level of China. In order to facilitate the evacuation of leaders during the war, coal and other minerals were transported in peacetime, and the construction of a line from Beijing to the deep mountains of the Taihang Mountains and eventually to the Yuanping Railway was included in the "third-line construction" plan.
  • Planning and construction
In March 1958, the Jingyuan Railway was investigated and designed by the Third Design Institute of the Ministry of Railways and a design statement was prepared. From April to June, the section from Beijing to Zaolin was surveyed. In June, the design proposal passed the identification of the Ministry of Railways, and the east end of the line was connected at Shijingshan South Station, and the west end was connected at the original level. In October, in order to meet the needs of the construction of Wutaishan Iron Mine, the western section (the section from Yuanping to Zolin) was built in advance, which was rebuilt from the Yuanping Railway built during the Anti-Japanese War.
In October 1960, the track laying from Yuanping to Zaolin was completed and delivered for temporary operation.
In October 1961, the Ministry of Railways of the People's Republic of China approved the appraisal opinion on the Preliminary Design of Beijing-Yuan Railway.
In April 1963, the Ministry of Railways of the People's Republic of China submitted to the State Planning Commission of the People's Republic of China the "Beijing-Yuan Railway Plan Assignment Book".
In 1964, the State Planning Commission of China approved the "Jingyuan Railway Plan Task Book", and compared with the preliminary design appraisal opinion, the technical standard of the line has changed.
In May 1965, the construction preparation of the Beijing-Zaolin section of the Jingyuan Railway was carried out. In November, the key project of the eastern section (Beijing to Zaolin section) began.
In 1967, the construction of the Beijing-Zaolin section of the Beijing-Yuan Railway was fully started. Yimaling Tunnel and Pingxingguan Tunnel to the west of Zijingguan have been started. In April, when the 14th Division of the Railway Corps was digging into the Yimaling Tunnel, it failed to detect the existence of an underground river 20 meters from the west entrance, and a 50-man engineer squad fell into the cave, killing all of them. After the accident, the designers moved the tunnel to the north and crossed it in the form of an integral ballast bed.
On June 1, 1969, the track was laid from Shijingshan South Station. In September 1969, the main construction of Yimaling Tunnel was completed. On October 1, the section between Beijing and Lianggezhuang was opened to traffic.
In early 1970, the central government requested that the entire Keihara Railway be opened to traffic by the end of 1971. In April, the line continued westward from Liang Gezhuang. In September, the track was laid east from Zaolin.
On October 30, 1971, the line was connected at 242 km from Lingqiu.
In July 1972, all lines of the Keihara Railway passed preliminary acceptance. In November, the Ministry of Communications of the People's Republic of China and the Chinese People's Liberation Army carried out acceptance and handover of the Beijing-Yuan railway. On December 31, the Jingyuan Railway was officially delivered to the Beijing Railway Branch and Datong Railway Branch of the Beijing Railway Bureau at the Beijing end of Lingqiu Station, and passenger trains were opened. As the railway was prepared for war, no opening ceremony was held on the Keihara Railway. [1]

Technical problem

The geology of the mountainous area through which the Jingyuan Railway passes is extremely complicated, and the strata are often fractured, and the rocks are crushed and easy to collapse. The seismic intensity along the line is 6 to 8 degrees. The river along the perennial flow, not navigable, flood period water rush, fluctuation range is large; Tributaries are generally intermittent rivers. The climate along the route is affected by the northwest high pressure belt, which is hot and rainy in summer and dry and cold in winter with an average temperature of 11.8 to 6.8 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature of 40.5 degrees Celsius and the lowest temperature of minus 28.2 degrees Celsius. The average annual rainfall is 490 to 740 mm. [1]

Key project

The main project of the railway is the Yongding River Bridge, with a total length of 836 meters, which is the longest bridge in the whole line. Yimaling Tunnel, with a total length of 7,032 meters, was the longest railway tunnel in China in the 1970s; Pingxingguan Tunnel, a total length of 6190 meters, tunnel exit elevation 1250 meters, is the highest point in the whole line. Value meaning

EDITOR
The Jingyuan Railway is a main railway line between the capital and Shanxi Province. During the construction of the railway, due to the rapid development of the national economy and the needs of national defense construction, twenty special lines were built along the line, and the construction of factories and mines in Lianggezhuang and Futuyu developed rapidly. The completion of the Beijing-Yuan Railway is of great significance to strengthening the war readiness of the capital, developing the mountainous areas of Hebei and Shanxi provinces, and accelerating the socialist economic construction.
