The.NET SDK is a set of libraries and tools that developers can use to create.NET applications and libraries. Microsoft has achieved another milestone with the release of.NET 7 Preview 1. Since this is a preview release, it may not be completely stable. More previews are expected to be released in a few months to introduce more features and bring stability.

This release, released on the occasion of.NET's 20th anniversary, builds on the foundation established by.NET 6. Includes a unified set of base libraries, runtimes, and SDKS that simplify the development experience and improve developer productivity.

This release introduces new features to.NET, such as API annotations supporting nullability, continuous JIT compiler optimizations, new apis, and support for more hot reload schemes. In addition, Microsoft claims to have tested it using Visual Studio 17.2 Preview 1 and recommends using.NET 7 Preview 1 with a preview version of Visual Studio.

Important new features and improvements

Support ICU library by default on Windows Server 2019 Windows Server 2019 lacks ICU support. Services and applications running on Windows Server 2019 that want to use ICU need to deploy ICU and enable some configuration in order to use it, as described in the documentation.

In.NET 7.0, Windows Server 2019 will support ICU by default.

Since.NET 7 is the current version of.NET, it will receive free support and patches from Microsoft for the next 18 months.

.NET Multi-Platform Application User Interface (.NET MAUI)

Microsoft is bringing a modern client with.NET 7 that natively supports multiple platforms. Since Microsoft also recently released.NET MAUI Preview 13, they plan to gradually roll it out to.NET 6 Release CandIDAtes (RC) and then general Availability (GA) to the public before moving on to.NET 7.

There still seems to be time for this feature to make its way to.NET 7, but it's good to know it's coming.

Creating cloud-native applications has become easier

Since cloud-native applications are now built from the ground up, using modern web-based resources such as database services and hosted containers,.NET 7 will make it easier to build cloud-native applications by exploring improvements to the developer experience, such as:

Simplify the setup and configuration required to implement secure authentication and authorization.

Improve the performance of application startup and runtime execution.

Microsoft plans to further develop this feature and optimize the container for better usability and experience.

Improved.NET applications

Microsoft has been making upgrades to.NET applications for some time, such as minimizing apis and hot overloading, new runtimes and C# language innovations, and the availability of a mature ecosystem of libraries and tools.

Microsoft says they will continue to innovate on these applications to eliminate the challenges faced by each individual.NET application, such as ASP.NET, WinForms, WPF, and others.

Improvement of hot reload

The hot reload feature in.NET 6 allows developers to make changes to their code while the application is running and view the results anytime, anywhere. This feature was first introduced in.NET 6 Preview 3.
