MariaDB database management System is a branch of MySQL, mainly maintained by the open source community, MariaDB under the GPL license is intended to be fully compatible with MySQL, including the API and command line, making it an easy replacement for MySQL. In terms of storage engines, XtraDB is used instead of MySQL's InnoDB. MariaDB was created by Michael Widenius, the founder of MySQL. Development was led by Michael Widenius, who had earlier sold the company he founded, MySQL AB, to SUN for $1 billion, and then, with SUN's acquisition by Oracle, ownership of MySQL fell into Oracle's hands. The name MariaDB comes from the name of Michael Widenius' daughter Maria.

MariaDB's translate-based Maria storage engine, which replaces MySQL's MyISAM storage engine, uses Percona's XtraDB, a variant of InnoDB that the developers of the branch want to provide access to the upcoming MySQL 5.4 InnoDB performance. This release also includes PrimeBase XT (PBXT) and the FederatedX storage engine.

Compared to the latest version of MySQL 5.6, MariaDB contains richer features in terms of performance, functionality, administration, and NoSQL extensions. Examples include microsecond support, thread pools, subquery optimization, group submission, progress reporting, and more.
