Laser Ultrasonic Visualizing Inspector (LUVI) is a nondestructive testing device that uses ultrasonic waves generated by laser light on the surface of an object to detect internal anomalies and defects. After the thermal strain ultrasonic wave produced by laser irradiation reaches the abnormal part or defect part inside the material, it returns to the surface again and is observed as defect echo. Anomalies and defects can be detected by observing how ultrasound transmits video.

Compared to traditional ultrasonic inspection equipment, LUVI has the following characteristics: Thanks to the non-contact scanning, defects can be detected visually by ultrasonic waves in parts with complex shapes such as surfaces, steps and narrow sections. A combination of laser and current scanners enables high-speed scanning for wide area and fast visual inspection. Easy to measure without cumbersome optical adjustments.

Metal, composite materials, resins, ceramic materials, etc., as the test object, can detect cracks, peeling, poor bonding, dispensing, corrosion and other defects.

The main applications include scratch detection of oil and gas, power plant pipelines, internal defects of parts, poor bonding, weld defects, composite material stripping and cracking detection, wave propagation mechanism clarification, ultrasonic probe performance evaluation, structural operating condition evaluation, material evaluation, etc.

In 2008, we developed the world's first LUVI and launched a new series of LUVI. At present, various users are using LUVI for nuclear power plant pipeline inspection, large steel manufacturers material quality inspection and fuel tank inspection, next generation electric vehicle fuel cell container inspection, aircraft blade inspection and so on. LUVI is starting to be used by many users not only in Japan, but also overseas.
