The league is divided into two divisions, the East and West, and each season is divided into regular season and playoffs. The regular season begins in August and ends in February, with each team playing a full 30 home and 30 away games, and the playoffs begin in February and end in April. The playoff champion was the overall KHL league champion of the year, winning the Gagarin Cup, and the regular season champion was awarded the Continental Cup.
