The predecessor of the CPC Central Party School was the Marxist Communist School founded in Ruijin, the central revolutionary base, in March 1933. In 1935, with the Chinese workers' and Peasants' Red Army Long March to northern Shaanxi, it was renamed the Central Party School of the Communist Party of China. The Party School of the CPC Central Committee has trained a large number of leading officials for China's revolution, construction, and reform, made important contributions to upholding the Party's ideological line and promoting theoretical innovation, and played an important role in advancing the cause of the Party and the people, especially reform and opening up. The National Academy of Governance, which was established in 1994, mainly trains senior and mid-level civil servants, high-level management personnel and policy research personnel.

In March 2018, in accordance with the unified deployment of the CPC Central Committee on deepening the reform of Party and state institutions, the responsibilities of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee and the National Academy of Governance were integrated, and a new Party School of the CPC Central Committee (the National Academy of Governance) was formed, implementing one institution with two brands and serving as a public institution directly under the CPC Central Committee.

On March 13, 1933, the CPC Central Committee founded the Marxist Communist School in Ruijin Soviet District, Jiangxi, marking the birth of the Central Party School.

In February 1937, the Party School of the CPC Central Committee was stationed in Yan 'an. The Central Party School in Yan 'an period occupies a special and important position in the history of the development of the Party school of the Communist Party of China.
After the Party School of the CPC Central Committee was re-established in 1977, it initiated and promoted the discussion on the question of truth standards in 1978.

The establishment of the National Academy of Governance began in 1988 and was officially established in September 1994.
In October 2008, the CPC Central Committee promulgated the Regulations on the Work of Party Schools, further standardizing, institutionalizing and legalizing the work of Party schools.
On December 14, 2009, the 92nd Executive Meeting of The State Council reviewed and adopted the Regulations on the Work of the School of Administration.

The main duties of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee (National Academy of Governance) are to play the role of the main channel for cadre education and training. We will systematically train leading cadres at the provincial and ministerial levels, leading cadres at the department and bureau levels, outstanding young and middle-aged cadres, heads of key state-owned enterprises, heads of colleges and universities, secretaries of county (city) Party committees, leading cadres of ethnic minorities, cadres of theoretical propaganda, and cadres of philosophy and social science teaching and research; Carry out research on major theoretical and practical issues, and undertake decision-making advisory services for the Party Central Committee; Training Marxist theoretical talents; To provide operational guidance to Party schools (administrative schools) at all levels throughout the country.
