It is one of the three deepest bays in Japan. The water in Toyama Bay can be roughly divided into three layers. The uppermost layer is the coastal surface water, which has a low salt concentration due to the inflow of river water. Up to 200-300 meters below the surface is the Tsushima Current, and 300-1000 meters below the surface is the natural water layer of the Sea of Japan. The Sea of Japan contains about 80% of the sea's water, and there are currents in the sea, which are always exchanged with the neighboring ocean. This intrinsic water layer is called deep water.
The surface water temperature of Toyama Bay varies from season to season, generally 8-30 ° C, but the deep water temperature is around 2 ° C all year round. Because sunlight does not reach that deep, there is little photosynthesis, and nitrogen, phosphorus, silicon and various minerals are abundant compared to the surface water. Deep water is also very clean, organic matter and bacteria content is only 1/1000-1/10000 of the surface water. Scientific investigations even say that the composition of the deep water is very similar to that of the mother's amniotic fluid.
