The list of problems in macOS Sonoma 14.4 continues to grow, and according to the latest news of foreign media on March 19, the latest found an error showing that the system will automatically delete the version of files saved on iCloud Drive

macOS 14.4 version has been found a variety of problems, including Apple modified the kernel to cause Java series software abnormalities, some USB Hub devices abnormal, some dongles can not be used normally.

Now there is a new issue that has the potential to have an even bigger impact, if you use iCloud web drive and have optimized Mac storage turned on, you may permanently lose all of your previous saved versions after upgrading to macOS version 14.4.

In older versions of macOS, if a file is released from iCloud's local storage, all the versions that have been saved in the cloud will be retained, and users can save the file to the local and cloud versions again.

However, when you perform the file release operation in macOS 14.4, the historical version saved in the cloud will also be permanently deleted, it should be emphasized that this feature is only after optimizing Mac storage is turned on.

The historical version of this file belongs to the version logger class, for example, using some code editors, after each modification of the content, the editor will generate a different version, convenient developers need to roll back to the old version, now the file is deleted, once modified, developers want to roll back is difficult.

Therefore, for users who have upgraded to macOS 14.4, either do not continue to use iCloud web disk at this time, or immediately disable the optimized Mac storage feature, disable this feature and then save files to prevent file loss.

To disable Mac storage, go to System Settings, tap Apple ID, select iCloud, turn off Optimized Mac Storage, and again, note that you may have to turn it off twice, and users have reported that it may turn itself on again.

Other known issues with macOS 14.4 include:

  • On March 12, users found that the USB peripheral embedded in the display was not working properly under macOS Sonoma 14.4. Two days later, on March 14, issues related to the printer were discovered, including damage to the driver.
  • On March 16, Oracle advised users who need to run Java not to update to macOS Sonoma 14.4 because the update would cause Java to unexpectedly terminate.
