WinMTR (Windows My Traceroute) is a graphical network diagnostic tool that integrates the tracert command and ping command to analyze network connection problems by sending small packets to the destination host and listening for their return. To detect the routing node through which the packet passes and the response time of each node, so as to help users understand the possible problem points in the network path.

With the graphical interface integrating tracert and ping commands, you can directly see the response time and packet loss rate of each node by using WinMTR, which is suitable for route tracing and Ping test under Windows. How to use WinMTR to test the network?

For example, verify that data packets are lost. When analyzing the WinMTR/MTR output results, you need to look at two things: packet loss and latency. First, let's talk about packet loss. If you see a swap at any node, it may indicate that there is a problem with that particular routing node. However, some service providers restrict ICMP transfers sent by the WINMTR/MTR tool. This gives the illusion of packet loss, but in fact no packet is lost. To confirm whether the packet loss you see is due to service provider restrictions, you can look at the subsequent one-hop routing nodes. If the jump shows a 0% loss, then you can be sure that it is an ICMP limit and that no packets are actually lost. Look at the following example: In this case, packet loss from the first to the second hop may be caused by ICMP restrictions on the second hop route. None of the remaining 8 routing nodes lost packets. In this case, the node with the fewest switched packets is taken as its actual packet loss rate. Consider another example: in this case, you would see 60% packet loss between the third hop and the fourth hop. You can assume that this is due to packet loss due to routing device limitations. However, you can see that the last hop is showing 40% lost packets. However, when different packet loss results are generated, the packet loss rate of the last hop is always adopted. Some packet loss may occur when the route is returned. The packet can arrive at its destination correctly, but it does not return properly. This is also calculated in the packet loss rate, but you can hardly tell from the WinMTR/MTR results report. Therefore, you need to collect WinMTR/MTR result reports in both directions at any time.

Instructions for using WinMTR

Double-click WinMtr. exe to run and open WinMTR Free version, we can see the text box in the Host column, enter the IP or domain name you want to track in the Host text box, and then press Start, then you can see the tracert and Ping results as shown in the following picture:
