(German: Nidwalden; French: Nidwald; Italian: Nidwaldo; Romance language: Sutsilvania) located in central Switzerland. The city has a population of 39,866 and its capital is Stans. It is the traditional "half state".

The state is located in
Switzerland
In the middle, it is connected to Lake Lucerne to the north, and is surrounded by mountains to the southeast and west. It is bordered to the west and south by Upper Walden, to the east by Uri, and to the north by Lucerne and Schwyz across Lake Lucerne. The highest point in the state is Lottstoli Peak.

The Swiss Confederation was established. The state government was not formed until the end of the 14th century, including parliament and courts. During the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the people of Upper and Lower Walden consulted together on important matters, but the two and a half states never merged. For example, the Upper Walden did not take part in the invasion of Bellinzona, Riviera and Brannio.

Many of them emigrated to other places, such as the Alsace region of France, which alleviated the overpopulation problem in Lower Walden. After the French Revolution, Napoleon began to expand the territory, and after the people of Lower Walden refused to accept his new constitution, the French army attacked Lower Walden on September 19, 1798, killing at least 408 residents. Napoleon's rule over Lower Walden ended in 1814, and the changes made during his rule were reversed. After that, the Lower Walden was only modified in 1877

Around 1500, the Lower Waldenians worked primarily as mercenaries. Since the middle of the 19th century, trade, industry and tourism have developed greatly. Until the middle of the 20th century, Lower Walden's economy was dominated by agriculture, with cattle and cheese being exported mainly to northern Italy. The economy is dominated by small and medium-sized enterprises in industries such as machinery manufacturing, medical supplies, international trade, optical and electronic instruments, etc. The largest employer in the state is a Pilatus

. Agriculture in Upper Walden is focused on raising livestock and supplying milk and meat. Most farms are family-run.
Local groups are committed to preserving the traditional culture of Upper Walden, such as

In winter and summer, the lake and mountains attract a large number of visitors to Lower Walden. The main resorts are in Klewenalp, Stanserhorn, Bannalp and Burgenstock.
