Commander of the Guards. In 244, Gordian III died in battle in Persia and declared himself emperor and was recognized by the Senate.
Like many emperors in the crisis of the 3rd century, Philip faced a number of rebels, such as Tiberius Claudius Pacatianus, Marcus Silbannacus, and Sponsianus. It also faced German invasions in Pannonia and Mercia.
