Philip's early life is unclear; it is said that he was born Syria Used to steal for a living. In 243, he became emperor Gordian III Commander of the Guards. In 244, Gordian III died in battle in Persia and declared himself emperor and was recognized by the Senate.
Like many emperors in the crisis of the 3rd century, Philip faced a number of rebels, such as Tiberius Claudius Pacatianus, Marcus Silbannacus, and Sponsianus. It also faced German invasions in Pannonia and Mercia.
In 248, Philip celebrated the 1000th anniversary of the founding of Rome. But not for long, Dekius Decius rebelled against Rome. Philip was defeated and killed.
