Commodus
To avoid becoming a victim of the ongoing conspiracy, he wanted to install an emperor of his own choosing. On 31 December 192, Letus murdered Commodus and elected Pettinax as the new emperor.
Since Letus was Commodus's murderer and Pettinax was erected by him, it was suspected that Pettinax had a hand in the plot. Historians are divided on whether this conjecture is correct. The surviving literature is inconclusive.
Pettinax reigned for only three months, during which time there were many mutinies and conspiracies. He was in a bad position because he lacked his own power base and instead relied entirely on the guards and soldiers in the capital, while Laetus continued to intend to make decisions from behind the scenes.

Commodus
Not only was the country's economy devastated after his long rule, but the people's respect for the emperor and traditional authority were also lost. Although Pettinax was loved by the citizens of Rome, this was of little use to him. He was killed by rebel soldiers on 28 March 193. From today's analysis, it appears that the accident was not a plot or a planned mutiny, but rather a result of the confusion caused by the indiscipline of the soldiers.
