Founded in 2011, its predecessor is the Australian Academy of Film Awards, which was founded in 1958, is the highest award for Australian film and television arts, known as Australia's "Oscar Awards".

The ATA Awards are an Australian film industry professional award that recognises producers, directors, writers and actors who excel in film and television each year. Starting from the seventh edition, the Academy also added a new "Best Asian Film" award.

The Atta Awards, formerly known as the Australian Film Institute Awards (AFI), were established in 1958, and 2018 marks the 60th anniversary of Australia's highest film honor. After the award was added to the television competition in 2011, it has now become the highest honor in the Australian film and television industry, the Ata Award.
