First, the establishment of the university

1. Kiev University in the first half of the 19th century.
Kiev State University, named after Taras Shevchenko, is a classical research university and a leading institution of higher education in Ukraine. Its history dates back to November 8, 1833, when the Minister of Education S.S. Uvarov proposed the establishment of the Imperial University of St. Vladimir on the basis of the Polish Kremenets Lyceum, which was transferred to Kiev. The grand opening of the University took place on July 15, 1834, on the anniversary of the Holy Apostle Prince Volodemir of Equality.
On October 18, 1834, the 30-year-old professor of botany, historian, folklorist, distinguished scientist and encyclopaedic writer Mikhailo Maksimovich was appointed the first rector of the University by order of Emperor Nicholas I.
In the academic year 1834-1835, the university had only one philosophy department, which consisted of two departments: the Department of Historical Linguistics and the Department of Physical Mathematics. Sixty-two students were enrolled in the first year, and classes began on August 28, 1834. The Faculty of Law was opened in 1835 and the Faculty of Medicine in 1841, which was created on the basis of the liquidated Faculty of Medicine of Vilnius University (Vilnius). During the first eight years, the management of the educational institution was forced to rent several private buildings that were simply not suited to the educational process. Under the project of V. Beretti, professor of architecture at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, the construction of the new school building began on July 31, 1837.
Under his direct leadership, a building in the classical style was built. Next to this building, Professor E. Trautfetter built a botanical garden. The transition of the university to its own large premises and the adoption of the University Charter in 1842 allowed the Cathedral system to grow continuously - the number of faculties increased from 20 to 37.
Contrary to the imperial government's desire to turn Kiev University into an outpost of Russian dictatorship, progressive ideas have always lived and developed within its walls. In the 1830s and 1860s, the university was one of the centers of the Polish national democratic movement, and between 1845 and 1847, the Cyril and Medodius Brothers were active here.
2. Kiev University in the second half of the 19th century
The revival of scientific and teaching activities at Kiev University in the second half of the 19th century was linked to the liberal reforms of the 1860s and the introduction of a new university charter in 1863. At that time, the autonomy of educational institutions was expanded, 15 new departments were established (from 37 to 52), and the number of teachers and students increased. Ninety new teachers from Russian and European universities were invited to work in Kiev, and talented students began to stay in various departments to carry out scientific and teaching activities.
Thanks to the reforms of the late 19th century, Kiev University became a strong educational center of pan-European significance. The number of students in the 1830s and 1840s was 500 (mainly Poles), in 1883 the university had 1,700 students (mainly Ukrainians and Russians), and by 1913 this number had grown to 5,000. 160 professors are engaged in scientific and teaching work and associate professors. The University has 45 educational and auxiliary institutions: 2 libraries (science and students), 2 observatories (astronomy and meteorology), a botanical garden, 4 faculty clinics, 3 hospitals and 2 clinical departments of the municipal hospital, an anatomical theatre and 9 laboratories. The faculty and students of the University are organizers and active participants in many world-renowned scientific societies: researchers of nature, surgery, physical mathematics, chemistry, history, named after the chronicler Nestor. The scientific activities of university professors are carried out in close contact with foreign scientific centers and outstanding scientists of the world. Extensively carry out scientific investigations abroad and publish works in foreign journals. One form of support for cultural links is the election of outstanding scientists and cultural figures as honorary members of the University. In particular, they are doctor Max Pettenkofer, historian Leopold von Ranke, writer Ivan Turgenev, chemist Dmytro Mendeleev, microbiologist Ilya Mechnikov and others.
3. Kiev University, 1900-1917
On April 20, 1906, representatives of the Ukrainian community of Chernigov (D. Yavorskyi, M. Kotsyubynskyi, M. Fedchenko, L. Shramchenko, etc.) raised the question of opening a department at the University of Kiev: "Ukrainian language, literature, history, ethnography and customary law, explaining these subjects in Ukrainian". On May 22, 1906, Professors V. Peretz and G. Pavlutskyi signed a document submitted to the office of the Dean of the Faculty of History and Languages, in which they confirmed the necessity of opening a department of Ukrainian Studies.
The Ukrainian public and cultural figures at Kiev University supported them: Ivan Lipa, Simon Petlyura, Dmytro Doroshenko, Borys Grinchenko, Oleksandr Lototskyi, Mykhailo Hrushevskyi, Serhii Yefremov, etc. On November 27, 1906, Ukrainian students submitted a statement to the Academic Council of the University asking for the creation of a Department of Ukrainian Studies. 1,430 students signed the application. However, the university rector M. Tsitovych, the reactionary section of the professors, and the leadership of the Imperial Ministry of National Education strongly opposed the idea. In 1907, Professors A. Loboda and V. Peretz took the initiative to begin teaching Ukrainian literature at universities, but the "inflammatory experiments" were soon outlawed.
The First World War severely disrupted the educational process. Due to the threat of the German and Austrian occupation of Kiev, many students ended up joining the active army, the university's medical clinic was turned into a military hospital, and part of the laboratory was evacuated to the army in the city of Saratov, deep in the Empire. It was not until the autumn of 1916 that the university returned to Kiev. The relocation caused serious damage to the university's laboratories, offices and museum collections. In such a state, Kiev University ushered in the day of the revolution, which resulted in the struggle for cultural and national revival and the establishment of its own independent state in Ukraine.
After the end of the dictatorship, continued demands by Ukrainian students and teachers for the opening of a department of Ukrainian studies and the introduction of Ukrainian language instruction forced the new authorities in Petrograd to make certain concessions. On June 27, 1917, the Ministry of National Education established regulations for the establishment of four departments of Ukrainian language, literature, history and Western Russian Legal history at St. Vladimir University. On September 5, 1917, the Ministry of the Interior submitted a corresponding submission to the Provisional Government. On September 19, 1917, the government adopted a resolution to establish the above-mentioned faculties at Kiev University. On September 30, 1917, the university administration ordered the preparation of the Department of Ukrainian Studies and competition for vacancies within three months. [4]

Ii. Soviet Period

1. Kiev University during the Ukrainian Revolution (1917-1919)
With the establishment of the Central Rada in Kiev in March 1917, dozens of teachers and hundreds of university students were actively involved in the struggle for Ukrainian independence. One of the most heroic pages of these independent competitions was the feat performed by Kiev University students near Kruti. At the beginning of January 1918, at the call of the leaders of the People's Republic of Ukraine, more than three hundred students and high school students in Kiev formed a student association. On January 29, 1918, the hundredth volunteer Corps (130 men) under the command of student centurion Andrei Omerchenko fought a tough defensive battle, protecting an important railway junction, the Kruti station in the Chernigov Oblast, and containing the advance of Russian Bolshevik forces on January 1, 1918. Kiev.
During the existence of the Head of State of Ukraine P. Skoropadskyi, St. Vladimir University gained the official status of the University of Kiev in Russia. This was followed by the establishment of the Ukrainian State University in Kiev in July 1918.
2. Dissolution of universities into independent institutions of higher education (1920-1933)
In February 1919, when the Bolsheviks occupied Kiev, St. Vladimir's University merged with the Ukrainian State University of Kiev into a single university, Kyiv University, whose main task was to train Soviet intellectuals. Since 1919, the People's Committee for Education, responsible for the development of schools, secondary and higher education, has been operating in Soviet Ukraine. The so-called "bourgeois remnants" of the university were swept away, and they themselves lost their autonomy: the administration of the university (rector, vice-rector) was liquidated, replaced by the university commissar, and all degrees and degrees were abolished. The title was abolished. The Soviet government aimed at subjecting the universities entirely to the tasks of the socialist revolution. However, even in this extremely limited form, universities, according to the leaders of the Soviet People's Education Committee, had no right to exist. They were declared "bourgeois" centers that had no place in the new Communist society.
As a result of these reforms, Kiev University (along with other Ukrainian universities) was dissolved in 1920. An independent medical school was established on the basis of the Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Law was transferred to the Institute of National Economic Research. From the Faculty of History - Linguistics, Physics - Mathematics - Natural Sciences of the University, Kiev Teachers' College and Kiev Higher Women's courses, named M. Drahomanova (since 1926 - Kiev Institute of Public Education) after the Higher Institute of National Education. The number of Ukrainian students in the educational institution reaches 65%.
As a result of the overhaul, higher education in the Soviet Union began to look very different from higher education in Soviet Russia. In particular, in the Republic of the Russian Federation, although the university lost its importance, it was not liquidated and worked in Moscow, Leningrad and other Russian cities. At the turn of the 1920s and 1930s, unification became one of the most important tasks of the Soviet government's policy in the field of education, and it was necessary to rebuild the entire system of higher education according to a single Russian model.
The lack of classical university education has also led to a reduction in the number of scientific and professorial personnel, the loss of the tradition of university education and science, and a decline in the overall level of higher education, as during the entire period after the closure of the university, no equivalent replacement was found. In general, the ability of the Soviet authorities to successfully organize the activities of higher education institutions without relying on the positive experience of pre-revolutionary higher education became apparent.
3. Restoration of Kiev University and its pre-war activities (1933-1941)
In the autumn of 1933, Ukrainian universities resumed operation, including Kiev State University. They are faced with the task of training teachers for higher education institutions and scientists for research institutes, factory scientific laboratories and research stations. These institutions of higher education were supposed to concentrate on training scientific talents for all the most important branches of science.
In 1934, the University celebrated its 100th anniversary. At that time, its structure was restored and active scientific and teaching activities began. In 1935, the school began serializing the "Notes on Natural and Human Sciences." New faculties were created - in 1938 there were already eight faculties: Physics and Mathematics, history, Linguistics, chemistry, geology and geography, biology, law and Foreign languages. In March 1939, to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko's birth, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union named Kiev State University after him. In the same year, the Caniff Biogeographic Reserve was assigned to the university and became the base for scientific experiments and education in the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
In the 1930s and '40s, universities were hit hard by a massive crackdown on teachers and students. Among the suppressed teachers were scientists: M.P. Kravchuk, N.Y. Mirza-Avakyants, M.O. Rusanivskyi, K.T. Shteppa, M.I. Bezborodko, A.U. Klimsky and many others.
However, despite ideological restrictions and repression, on the eve of World War II, Kiev University was one of the leading institutions of higher education in the Soviet Union, ranking third among Soviet universities. There are more than 4000 students in the school, more than 300 professors and associate professors, and teachers working in 52 departments, including 8 academicians of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, 6 corresponding academicians, 24 doctoral students and 65 science students. Through postgraduate education, the school has trained highly qualified young experts in 43 specialties.
With the beginning of hostilities in the summer of 1941, Kiev University was evacuated. Most of the students have gone to the front, and a large proportion of the faculty, together with their colleagues from Kharkiv State University, continue their education within the framework of the United Ukrainian State University in the city of Kizilorda, Kazakhstan. At the same time, an attempt was made to establish the work of a university in Nazi-occupied Kiev, but the Nazis soon closed the university, many teachers were suppressed, and students were taken to Germany for forced labor. During the Battle of Kiev in October-November 1943, the University suffered irreparable damage and losses. The main educational building, the Red, was heavily damaged, and libraries, museum collections and laboratories were looted.
4. Kiev University in the post-war Period (1944-1991)
Despite the heavy losses, in the decades after the war, Ukraine's major universities not only managed to recover their lost potential, but also greatly strengthened it. After the liberation of Kiev, the revival of the university began immediately. Students and teachers rebuilt the Humanities and Chemistry building on their own, and classes resumed on January 15, 1944, for advanced classes and from February 1 onwards. In the summer of 1944, the Kyiv Group of the United State University of Ukraine, consisting of 146 students, 3 professors, 7 associate professors and 11 teachers, returned from Kizil-Horda. In the new academic year 1944-45, the university enrolled nearly 1,500 young men and women, with an additional 2,000 students joining a year later. Eighty faculties were restored, with 290 professors, associate professors and teachers. 1946 International students at Kiev University in the first years of the war. Between 1947 and the end of the 1940s, the university's workload had reached pre-war levels. The growth of universities was particularly rapid in the 1950s. By 1958, Kyiv State University had 11 faculties in operation, with about 10,000 students enrolled. Between 1959 and 84, the University trained 70,000 experts in various sectors of the national economy, science, education and culture. [4]

The coat of arms of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv State University was designed in 1994 to commemorate the 160th anniversary of the university. The graphic work was done by artist Serhiy Belyaev.
The center of the badge depicts the main building of the university - the Red Building - a symbol of the university's basic education. On the left is depicted the Archangel Michael - heavenly patron saint of the land of Kiev, and on the right is depicted the holy Apostolic Archduke Vladimir - patron saint of knowledge and constant scientific research, the name of the university bore until 1919.

Taras Shevchenko Kiev State University School song
Composed by O. Marchun,
Lyrics by L. Shurk
High above Ukraine,
Like the unstoppable flight of a bird,
In the capital Kiev, great
Shevchenko University.
Here is the spirit of solidarity and science,
Relatives here. - Professors, students
Ukraine, our minds and our hands.
Our glorious university!
Chorus:
Alive, Alma mater,
Grow up Alma mater,
Glory forever,
May you prosper,
Like a star that sows,
In the high sky constellations!
Volodymyr's name. - Prince
They carry glory through the ages
The glory of Shevchenko and the light of science
Students and professors.
Glorious history teaches us
To create beauty within these walls,
Student elites are the hope of the country.
Our future is growing here!
