The National Museum of Kuwait, built in 1957, was severely damaged during Iraq's invasion and occupation of Kuwait in 1990, and most of its valuable exhibits were looted by Iraqi troops. After the 1991 Gulf War, Iraq returned some of Kuwait's looted antiquities after United Nations intervention.
