The Sudanese Armed Forces were established during British colonial rule. After independence, the army was sultanized. August 14 is Army Day. Compulsory military service was introduced, requiring Sudanese between the ages of 18 and 30 to serve for two years.
As of January 2023, the total strength of the Armed forces is about 200,000, consisting of three services: land, sea and air. The Soviet Union also organized and trained a military-style civil defense army of about 100,000 personnel.
