Tacloban, the port city of the Philippines. Capital of Leyte Province. It is located on the northeastern tip of Leyte Island. Population 117,000 (1984). It was the Spanish colonial capital.

It became an important trading port in 1874. The depth of the anchorage is 7-12 meters.
Tacloban was incorporated in 1952. There are oil depots and airfields. The center of the roundabout road. Business is flourishing. Export banana, copra, timber and fish. There are universities and technical institutes. The southern Red Beach is a tourist attraction.
