After party politics ceased in the mid-1960s, the islands had no formal political parties. Elections for the legislative Assembly are generally held between several groups and independent candidates. All candidates pledged to further develop the Cayman economy and advocated maintaining ties with Britain. The first new political party, the Progressive Democratic Party, was founded in 1991. In the November 1992 elections, the National Group won. In February 1995, Gilbert McLean, an independent member of the Legislative Assembly, formed the Cayman Group, which was re-elected in a general election held in November 1996.
