Creation background

Train of thought
In 2016, the project began over the summer, with director Hayao Miyazaki writing storyboards while working on the short animated film Boro the Caterpillar. It became a painting in August 2017 and the title was announced in a public dialogue in October of the same year [10] . It is also director Hayao Miyazaki's twelfth feature-length animated film [21] It is also a gift from Miyazaki Hayao to his grandchildren as a grandfather [61] .
Miyazaki's film Interval The wind rises It was relaunched 10 years later. The title pays homage to novelist Genzaburo Yoshino's 1937 book of the same name, but the story is entirely original by Miyazaki [111] .
Studio Ghibli said that Hayao Miyazaki's 11th film, The wind rises "Is Miyazaki's last film [4] . But in 2017, the studio said Miyazaki would continue to make new films , It is said to be Miyazaki's last film [5] .
" What do you want to do with your life "Is a novel that I read from the age of 10 to 70 years old, and Miyazaki Hayao formed a strange fate: when he was in elementary school, Miyazaki Hayao read an excerpt from the book in a textbook, and soon after accidentally saw and bought it again at a secondhand bookstore near his home; Nearly 60 years later, he still remembered the book, writing in his autobiography: "Until now, I can clearly remember the first time I opened the book." What do you want to do with your life "When the feeling, the heart for no reason to surge a sense of nostalgia [16] " Miyazaki also wrote about the book in his autobiography with a long essay "Memories of a Lost Landscape", "This book conveys the idea that no matter how difficult or cruel The Times are, we must live like a person." [153]
The original appeared in the animation
Producer Toshio Suzuki believes that in the current era of consumerism and entertainment supremacy, in this society that is shrouded in a sense of closure and filled with the atmosphere of nowhere, he will look at Yoshino Genzaburo's" What do you want to do with your life Is a kind of "resistance" [54] .

Character prototype

In the design of the film's characters, Miyazaki Hayao also refers to his own experience. For example, Miyazaki Hayao's father ran a fighter factory during the war, just like his real father, and Miyazaki Hayao also moved from the city to the countryside with his family because of the impact of the war [53] .
The film's main character is based on Miyazaki Hayao, Miyazaki's best friends Toshio Suzuki and Isao Takahata are the film's "adventure guide" heron and "master of the undead world" uncle [116] The film began in 2017, and Isao Takahata died on April 5, 2018, at the age of 82 [153] .

Production process

Still hand-painted, it was Ghibli's largest production to date, with 60 artists working at the same time, but only one minute of film could be produced a month, which meant that 12 months out of the year, 12 minutes of film would be available. In 2020, Suzuki said they had been working on the film for three years, producing 36 minutes of animation, and expected it to be completed within the next three years [147] .
In order to better present the work, the production team did not set a deadline for production, and as Miyazaki Hayao grew older, he could no longer do high-intensity work. Therefore, the production team also adapted the schedule to Miyazaki Hayao's pace, and the production process was relatively slow [55] .
Miyazaki does not elaborate on the painting, but merely explains his general intentions and expectations for the animators, who are free to create as they see fit [55] .
Inoue felt that he did not fit Miyazaki's style and could not draw the characters and Settings that Miyazaki wanted, but at Honda's invitation, Inoue participated in the production of the animation. Most of the characters in the film were created by Honda based on Miyazaki's sketches, but Natsuko's appearance was reinterpreted by Honda in his own style [56] .
In 2017, Miyazaki Hayao officially returned, announced the preparation of the animated feature film "What kind of life Do you want to Live", while recruiting artists from Japan and abroad [152] . On October 28, at the event site of the Saushiyama House Memorial Hall, Miyazaki Hayao publicly stated that the title of his new work has been determined to be "What kind of life Do you want to Live?" [149] .
Produced by hand, What Do You Want to Do with Your Life is Ghibli's largest production, with 60 artists working on the film simultaneously. At the same time, producer Toshio Suzuki revealed that the work of the film was so heavy that the studio could only complete one minute of content in one month, and the total time of the film was 124 minutes [153] .

Make tidbits

When it was released in Japan, it adopted a model of zero publicity - in addition to the release of payment posters before the release, there were no stills, trailers and other materials. Miyazaki had concerns about it, but Suzuki said that in the era of information explosion, the zero-publicity approach may become an attractive way. [9] . Who wrote, composed and sang the theme song Genshi Mizu He has long admired Miyazaki and claims to have been greatly influenced [11] .
After filming began, Hayao Miyazaki I found that my body was getting worse and worse, and the film was delayed. His old friend Toshio Suzuki has joked about the possibility of dying before finishing filming, while Miyazaki has said he is ready to die during the making of the animated film [16] .
Toshio Suzuki believes that the name "What kind of life do you want to live" is relatively unfamiliar for overseas audiences, and "Heron and Youth" is easier for overseas audiences to understand the content of the film, so Suzuki Toshio suggested using "Heron and Youth" as the translation of the Chinese region. Both the Japanese and Chinese posters had the title inscribed by Toshio Suzuki [59 ] .
China Region posters
Note: (The following highlights involve revealing the plot, please watch it as appropriate)
The interactive clip of the real person and the heron "falling in love and killing each other" impressed many viewers, and one netizen said that "the way the real person and the heron quarreled is simply playing me and my friends". The friendship between the real person and the heron can also be traced in reality, and the adventure of the real person and the heron is also the epitome of the animation career of Miyazaki Hayao and Toshio Suzuki for 40 years [150] .
The words "Learn from me and die" are engraved on the locked gate, and behind it are huge stone tombstones, apparently suggesting that Japan's imitation of Western civilization will only lead to its demise [151] .
Observe that when the real person enters the tower through the tunnel, the stone door at the entrance is engraved with the words "fecemi la divina podestate", meaning "divine power, incomparable wisdom". This sentence comes from the third Inferno, The Gate of Hell, in Dante's Divine Comedy, which has actually made it clear to the audience that the so-called alien world is the world of the dead [151] .
Tower world entrance stone gate
The lovely and simple wah-wah-wah-wah can be seen as civilians dying of war all over the world [151] .
The pelicans that feed on the noise are the Japanese who have been seduced or coerced by militaristic ideas. Their lives are now based on ripping off the colonial people [151] .
All the prey. All the prey
The sign the parrot carries in the film is printed with the word "Duch", which comes from the English Dutch. The word Dutch comes from German Deutsch, which is the name of German people for their own nation. During World War II, Nazi Germany, led by Adolf Hitler, was the most powerful and brutal fascist state. At this point, the reason for the cannibalistic nature of the parrots and the fanatical worship of the parrot king is self-evident [151] .
When the real person enters the higher dimensional world, he finds Great Uncle Justice playing with blocks made of 13 stones. He asked why it was stone and not wood. Because 13 is an unlucky number in Western legend, stone is a building material from the West. In old Japan, stone was only used to make tombstones. It was the introduction of Western ideas that eventually led the Japanese ruling class to expand its ambition and wage war abroad. If we continue to maintain the world of these contaminated stones, then nothing will change [151] .

Evaluation of works

Foreign media evaluation

What Do You Want To Do with Your Life, which will be the best animated film in the world for decades to come, is deliberately an independent film, avoiding any kind of mass popularity, in order to deliver a deeper message to the younger generation [21] . (unseen-japan)
"What Do You Want To Do With Your Life" may not be the pinnacle of Miyazaki's movies, but it's still a great movie, or at least not a bad one, that aims to use a fantasy story about coping with the parting of a loved one [21] . (Anime website review)
To get a deep understanding of the setting and story requires meditating on various scenes and analyzing Miyazaki while watching it repeatedly, while also noting the similarities between the two, the story of the novel and Miyazaki's own biography [20] . (Magazine Cinemas+ Review)
Visually and story-wise, the film is one of Ghibli's best. On the other hand, those who aren't Ghibli fans may be confused by the dizzying pace at which the scene develops. Ghibli has made fantasy that is easy for children to understand, and has finally put out a work that takes time and consideration to understand, so naturally there will be chaotic reactions, and there will certainly be many viewers who are simply blown away by the visual beauty [20] . (Eiga channel review)

Domestic evaluation

Throughout his life, Miyazaki Hayao has tried his best to distance himself from the Japanese Bushmaster and militarism, so the background Settings and scene arrangements of many works are not Japanese, and the value statements are also trying to get closer to the truth, goodness and beauty with universal empathy. However, from 1992's Red Pig to 2024's What Do You Want to Live? His so-called farewell work, What Do You Want to Live? Miyazaki keeps telling the story of Japan's war of aggression. In What Do You Want to Live? 图穷匕见, Miyazaki returns to his true Japanese position and creates a vivid Japanese narrative. This is the journey of Miyazaki Hayao's spiritual return to his hometown, and also the journey of the spiritual fall of a world animator. Since then, Miyazaki Hayao left the world and returned to Japan [143] . (Comments by Du Xiaojie, Professor, School of Journalism and Communication, Nanning Normal University)
What kind of Life Do You Want to Live is not only a search for the meaning of life, while boldly facing the difficulties of life, from the picture to the portrayal of the character, Miyazaki Hayao's unique artistic perspective and humanistic care are almost everywhere, from this level, the audience's viewing process is also always wrapped in the author's kindness and enthusiasm for life. For Miyazaki fans, "What Do You Want to Do with Your Life" has another surprise. From the characters to the details, Miyazaki has incorporated many elements from his past works, making this journey to the big screen an interesting and sentimental look back in some ways. There is no doubt that "What kind of life Do You Want to Live" is still a very Miyazaki's animated film, and at the same time, it is a different deep philosophical work, in which the questioning of the value of life, the hero's ultimate courage and choice in the face of imperfections, for everyone in the present, or especially worth in-depth taste [142] . (China News Review)
The different world, which is also shrouded in the double shadow of war and death, is not a utopian paradise completely different from cruel life, but more like a "augmented real world" full of metaphor and irony. The parrot with green hair represents the fascist imperialist army, the pelican represents the underclass soldiers brainwashed by war, and the alien meteorite represents the colonialist ideas from the West. More critics have given three steps to watch the movie: first, to see Miyazaki Hayao's review of his life; Second, we think about Miyazaki Hayao's reflection on the history of the Japanese nation and his worries about where to go in the future. Third, answer the question left by Miyazaki Hayao to the audience - what kind of life should we live in peacetime? Or maybe we just need a way to watch the film, as Hayao Miyazaki explains of the original: "The book can't describe the violence of that era directly, it can only tell the reader that even if such an era comes, you should not give up being a human being, to survive." No matter how cruel The Times, to live like a real person [134] . (New weekly review)
The theme of the film, "What kind of life do you want to live", is incompatible with The Times we live in no matter from any point of view - postmodernism brings a centrality of consciousness and multiple value orientation, and it hopes that people today are no longer confined to social ideals, the meaning of life, traditional morality and other grand issues. But Miyazaki has to go against the tide and ask the audience questions in a way that is not popular or clear. What is particularly noteworthy is that the underworld collapses before the real people in the film can make a real choice. This is also an echo of the end of the film - what should human beings pursue, only in the image of the world will not have results, must return to the more realistic present, towards a broader future [140] . (Beijing Youth Daily Review)
The Chinese title of the film, "What kind of Life Do you Want to Live?" is a good choice. Everyone, when they see it, may be tempted to ask themselves. After watching the movie, the question may become more specific: How do we deal with the hurt, disappointment and sadness that the world brings? What kind of Life Do You Want to Live is perhaps the lesson that 83-year-old Miyazaki Hayao has left for everyone, and his own answer has been given in the film: No matter how devastated the real world is, we still have to face it well. So whether there's another one or not, believe Miyazaki when he says, "I think of this as the last movie of my life." He had said all he wanted to say. When the young man hugged and said goodbye to Fire, Miyazaki Hayao also completed his tender farewell to the world [141] . (Yangcheng Evening News review)
